Biological Nutrient Removal

Ideal for when stringent nutrient requirements must be met.

Solutions for Nitrogen and Phosphorus Removal

Regulations limiting the concentration of nutrients (primarily nitrogen and phosphorus) are increasingly common – particularly in watersheds that are sensitive to eutrophication. By far the most economical and environmentally friendly means of nutrient removal is via modifications to the conventional activated sludge process. Circle H2O’s team has built projects incorporating biological nutrient removal (BNR), namely, nitrification and denitrification as well as enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR).

Often, the life cycle cost of a project is reduced by incorporating biological nutrient removal (BNR) even when there is no regulatory requirement to limit the concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in the treated wastewater. As an example, denitrification can reduce the aeration power consumption and (in ZLD projects) the thermal energy needed to achieve ZLD. Circle H2O’s team has the experience and expertise to rapidly evaluate alternative process schemes to arrive at the lowest life cycle solution.
